Why You Need An N95 Surgical Mask And How To Use One

What is a N95 Surgical Mask, and Where to Find One

People can now choose to utilize an NIOSH-approved N95 mask instead of cloth face covers, per the CDC's recommendation. KN95 masks are made to offer almost the same protection as a N95 respirator, which is mandated by the CDC's NIOSH. The KN95 and KN94 are similar to the N95, however they are made to international standards rather than the N95's approval by the CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. When manufactured and worn properly, KF94 masks may filter up to 94% of bits, as specified by the Korean government. Both the KN95 and the N95 masks are intended to filter out 95% of particles as small as 3 microns. If the N95 mask is properly fitted and meets NIOSH standards, it can filter up to 95% of airborne particles. Surgery masks do not appear to be inferior than N95 respirators in protecting healthcare workers against influenza in typical health care settings, even when the availability of N95 respirators is restricted. Although there have been some studies comparing different types of respiratory protection equipment, 13–15 there is a lack of information comparing medical masks to N95 respirators in health care workers. We postulated that among health care workers who are at high risk of being exposed to flu, a medical mask, which is less costly and much more easily available than a N95 respirator, would provide equivalent protection as a N95 respirator. Personal protective equipment (PPE) can include N95 respirators and surgical masks, both of which are designed to prevent particles and liquids from entering the user's lungs and polluting their airways. KN95 masks are another type of respirator used for PPE, similar to the more common N95 masks (PPE). Medical masks provide both liquid and particle obstacle defense, but they are no substitute for respiratory protection provided by a N95 respirator or another filtering facepiece respirator (FFR). Individuals are required to use a medical N95 or, if none are available, to cover their respirator with a medical mask or guard in settings that specify fluid-resistant respirators, such as medical settings. When treating patients, medical staff at Johns Hopkins Medicine wear face shields over their masks or N95 respirators for increased safety. Clear shield face masks are not as safe as full face masks since they still allow air to enter the wearer's lungs and there are holes around the face. The company confirmed that some masks, such N95 respirators, are far more protective than others, including towel and medical masks, and gave further details on the differences across masks on January 14. Even though there has been product support since then, many people in the United States still choose for cloth or even thinner surgical masks rather than N95 or KN95 respirators. According to a White House official, the N95 masks (so named because they filter out at least 95% of airborne particles) are being shipped out today and should be available for purchase by the end of the week through pharmacies and community university hospitals.
